Under fire Mill Brow Reserves manager Chris Culkin has dismissed Stuart Rowson's claims that he was 'treated like a dog'.
Rowson declared himself available for Sunday's visit to Norris Villa, ending his self-imposed exile after failing to turn up to the previous fixture.
But Rowson, despite saying he wanted to get back into the team hit out at his treatment in the local press.
Speaking ahead of the Norris Villa game Culkin said: 'I answer this question, and then no more, because we have this game. It is an important game against Norris Villa. I totally disagree with Stuart, what he said, because i never treated him badly. Maybe the opposite, i treated him too well'

Rowson is available for selection for Sunday's fixture. The squad is to be announced this evening; It is believed that there are more than 20 players available for selection, so there may well be some disappointed faces come Sunday morning.

Stuart Rowson has marked his return to Mill Brow by accusing reserve team manager Chris Culkin of treating him 'like a dog' over the incident that has sparked a further rift between club and player.
However the controversial wideman says he is ready to apologise further if it means he can resume his career with the Stockport and District Sunday League 4th Division side. Rowson has not played since the 3-1 defeat to Navigation after failing to turn up for training sessions and matches since that game. Talking about his failure to turn up to the fixture against AFC Stockport Reserves Rowson said "I was kind of in a bad mood, I'd woken with a fearsome hangover, i'd not enjoyed my breakfast so I decided to get back in bed. I heard from the manager that evening. He started on me, swearing at me and treating me like a dog"

But Rowson did admit he was willing to say sorry again if the club deemed it necessary and hopes to be match fit in 2 weeks. "I do not think i was wrong, but if they think so i apologise" added the aging winger. "I am ready to return, win and do my best for the clubs shirt" "Hopefully i can help Mill Brow achieve what they want to achieve. I always said i would retire at 38, today i say no, i have much more to give"

His return follows high level negotiations between his agent and the Mill Brow board and management. Talking about Rowson and Culkin last night, Rowson's agent said "I think they have pretty much resolved their issue"

Mill Brow Reserves played a get-out-of-jail card yesterday. Gaining the victory and playing some fantastic football at times, but also conceding sloppy goals, a problem that has haunted them throughout the season. They will certainly wake up this morning thankful to get the victory against a side that have never taken a point from the Marple side.
As the match, that will be overshadowed by Stuart Rowson's non-appearance, edged towards the 50 minute mark yesterday, Mill Brow Reserves were staring at a first defeat to AFC Stockport Reserves, Missed chances by Culkin and Boardman in the first half, and a scrappy goal conceded meant the home side led. Fortunately a goal by Henry Roberts, 2 more from Dean Large added to a Chris Garlick strike proved just enough to scrape home in the freezing cold of Whitehill.
Mill Brow Reserves will be happy with a win, with an under-strength, fledgling side, but there will surely be changes in personnel as key players are likely to be available after injury and other commitments, for the far stiffer challenge of Norris Villa next Sunday.

Goodwin - Made Two Outstanding Saves

In fairness to Mill Brow Reserves the side was thrown together at the last minute, as it was believed that the game would be postponed due to the snow earlier in the week, they showed great character in coming back from a goal down. But the manager is aware that much work will still need to be done before facing the Division 4 big boys.

Culkin said "Some players put their hands up here but with the likes of Andrew Given, Chris Barlow, Wes Jubb and Will Darby returning to the squad next week, we may have to take this opportunity to draw breath and look at areas we can improve on"

Prior to kick off yesterday the game was in doubt as fixtures on adjacent pitches fell to the weather, the likes of which has not been seen for some time. If ever AFC Stockport Reserves had a chance to end their Mill Brow hoodoo, then this seemed to be their opportunity.

Garlick - Linked up with Rick O'Shea to score

Mill Brow Reserves started brightly having several opportunities to take the lead, Culkin firing wide after being set up by Boardman, and Boardman himself heading straight at the keeper from a Culkin corner. Things looked good for Mill Brow Reserves as Large and Williamson controlled the midfield, with Boardman enjoying himself enormously in the inside right position.

All this would evaporate though as AFC Stockport Reserves took the lead, following a goal mouth scramble the ball was fired in from the edge of the area. It was 1-0 at the break.

Mill Brow Reserves needed to respond quickly and they did, firstly equalising when a Culkin corner was bundled in by Henry Roberts, then taking the lead when Garlick fired home with the aid of a deflection. Unbelievably, AFC Stockport equalised against the run of play. A quite stunning strike from 25 yards out.

A Dean Large free kick restored the lead immediately before the same player added his second with another long range effort in the dying minutes. 4-2 it finished.

Rowson: I let down club and manager

Stuart Rowson admitted last night he had let down both his manager and his club after failing to turn up for yesterdays game against AFC Stockport Reserves. Sadly just the latest in a line of disciplinary breaches by the Mill Brow Bad Boy.
On a day of multiple apologies following those coming out of Liverpool following their clash with Manchester United on Saturday , Rowson did admit he was wrong to snub his team mates by not turning up to the game.
He said; "I've not only let Chris down, but also the club and what it stands for. I'm sorry, I made a mistake and i regret what happened. I should have turned up for the game and i want to apologise for my actions. I would like to put this issue behind me and concentrate on playing football"
The statement was published the same day a story is expected to run in the Stockport Express calling for the Mill Brow board to 'get hold of Mill Brow and repair it's global image'

Rowson - I'm Sorry

There have been no public comments from the board members, but it is believed that the influence of board members has been linked to the managers refusal to support his troublesome wideman.

Rowson's conduct drew criticism from from the players union and PFA Chief Executive Gordon Taylor described him as "disrespectful, inappropriate and embarrasing".

Mill Brow Reserves having won only once in 2012 suffered a humbling defeat last time out against bottom side Navigation. It means the league title is out of their reach, but far from seeing this weekends game as a dead rubber Culkin says this match will be used to determine places for the rest of the season.
"You can't keep under performing forever" he said "So all of us have a responsibility on our shoulders to improve our game"

"I've a strong belief that nobody has a right to a place in the Mill Brow side. The environment only works properly if there is pressure for your place, so we all have to work very hard"
As well as needing a victory to kick start the run in, Culkin admitted:
"This match is very important because it can give us momentum heading into the league run-in. We desperately want to avoid losing and come back to show we're one of the better sides in the division. You definitely learn more as a team when you lose than when you win. We can't pretend that the 3-1 defeat to Navigation didn't happen, just like we can't pretend that we didn't have a disappointing defeat to Romiley Sports a few weeks ago.
We have to face up to the fact that we have shortcomings, we then have to tackle them. We've another game on Sunday away at Hinds Head Reserves and we have to stand up to the challenge. We cannot and will not hide.
The players at fault need to hold their hands up, it's the players who have got us into this poor position in the league. It is no good pointing fingers or only partially taking blame. Everyone needs to acknowledge all their own shortcomings if we are to progress as a team. Most observers would have expected us to easily beat Navigation, we should have done so, especially the amount of position we had and our territorial domination. But Navigation took their chances, we conceded bad goals and we missed several chances ourselves.
When things are going well, there is no better club to be at than Mill Brow, and this is a great side to be in. But when things don't go so well some go missing. We've still got a lot of work to do if we want to achieve our goals. It may be a long shot, but if we can finish in the top four or five spots then we can still go up, which ultimately was our aim at the start of the season.
We've a very important game coming up on Sunday now, yes the league title may now be out of reach, but we've eight or nine games left and if we can win as many of those as possible then we can really climb the table. Especially considering the way other teams are taking points off each other regularly. We simply need to concentrate on our own displays.
When we beat Brinnington Youth i thought we kept our feet on the ground, but based on the performance against Navigation that was obviously not the case. This was a reality check for us. The players need to remember that you're not as good as everyone says you are when you're playing well, nor are you as bad as they say you are after a defeat. If we hold that thought then we'll be ok.

As the January 2012 Transfer Window nears it's close, Mill Brow Reserves manager Chris Culkin has not given up hope of securing new players ahead of Sunday's fixture against Hinds Head Reserves. A Mill Brow insider has revealed that he is in talks with at least three players, one of whom is believed to be a long term target, the other two being brought to his attention by an agent in the last 24 hours. While Culkin himself has remained tight-lipped on these rumours, Tom Boardman posted the following on his Facebook status earlier today;
"11 hours to go before the Mill Brow transfer window slams shut. A mystery agent is rumoured to have lined up 3 players. Big night ahead for Culkin...."

Notable mentions must go to Chris Culkin for his match-winning four goal haul against Brinnington Youth, but based on the fact that 2 of the goals were laid on by Tony Williamson along with him winning the penalty in that game, Williamson is nominated as the first winner of the player of the month for 2012.

Furious Chris Culkin threatened to get rid of his under-performing Mill Brow Reserves stars after they suffered a humiliating defeat at Navigation.
The manager was enraged by his teams under-par performance and ripped into them after the game for their disrespectful attitude. "They will not be here much longer if that is the way they perform." said Culkin

"We expect a much higher standard than that. It is all very well saying that they might be distracted by the dog faeces on the pitch or a game the day before, but every game is massive for us."

Mill Brow Reserves enjoyed a good result last weekend against Brinnington Youth and were expected to follow up with another win, but Culkin was embarrassed as his team were rolled over by opponents facing a battle to avoid finishing rock bottom of the Stockport and District Sunday Football League.

"If they think they can turn the clock on and off, they will not be turning it on and off at this club" he added.

"If it is a one off fine, but if it is going to be repeated then there will not be too many repeating their performances in a yellow shirt because we will not stand for that"

"Respect is a huge part of being a successful club and if they do not have that respect for other teams and most importantly for Mill Brow then they are in a bit of trouble."

Mill Brow Reserves never recovered from conceding a sloppy goal right on half time, followed by an even worse goal early in the second half. Both goals were preventable. Given did manage to pull one back as Mill Brow laid siege to the Navigation goal. The home side sealed the points against the run of play in stoppage time when a cross was turned past Goodwin.

Culkin said his players approach was an affront to the Mill Brow way.

"If they thought they could just turn up and get a result, they got a lesson today" he said. "The most disappointing thing for me is that i don't think we were ready to play the game. I don't think the approach was correct. I don't think the way we went about our work was correct"

The official man of the match went to Mill Brow Reserves central defender Andy Gaw.

Wes Jubb was forced out of the action in only the second minute, with a groin injury that could see him sidelined for some weeks.

Owen Makes Case for Goodwin Defence

Michael Owen has leapt to the defence of under-fire Mill Brow Reserves goalkeeper Steven Goodwin in the wake of their 3-1 defeat to Navigation. Fans and journalists criticised Goodwin for failing to deal with the shot that led to the first goal when a rebound struck Nuttall and went into his own net, and he was then unable to prevent a cross from squirming in for the 2nd goal. But Owen declared on Twitter;
'I'm not having either goal was his fault. The problem is once you get labelled, mud sticks and now any tiny mistake is magnified. Other keepers make similar mistakes and nothing gets said'

Just weeks after turning his back on Mill Brow Reserves following the defeat to Romiley Sports, a Mill Brow insider has suggested that Andrew Given has once more declared his availability for the side. Even more surprising than that, is that the insider believes he is actually being considered for a place in the fixture against Navigation. The source who does not wish to be named indicates that Given is willing to be substitute if necessary and that manager Culkin has held low level talks with the troubled striker about his involvement.

Boardman Snubbed for Navigation Clash!!!

Mill Brow insiders are suggesting that central defender Tom Boardman may miss out on selection for the Reserves match on Sunday, away at Navigation. Although the squad has not officially been announced, our sources have revealed that Boardman is only on the standby list for what manager Culkin has desribed as "...our biggest game of the season so far"

This move would come as a massive blow to Boardman on the back of his successful promotion to the 1st Team squad, a squad it appears he is part of for the immediate future. He would have been hoping to play to maintain his fitness and an opportunity to fine-tune his form ahead of the upcoming games. If our reports are to be believed this could be considered a massive snub by Boardman and my cause the relationship between Boardman and the Reserve team boss to break down further. An unamed insider has been reporting a rift between the two for some time, a rift that may now be beyond repair.

On the back of a fine away win at Brinnington Youth, Mill Brow Reserves travel to the league basement boys on Sunday. Confidence should be high for the Marple side, although they should also remember the horrific performance in their previous game to ensure focus.

Manager Chris Culkin will have the luxury of being able to select from a large pool of players, as there is no 1st team fixture this week, although he is expected to remain loyal to those who played in last weeks victory. With star players queuing up to play the temptation to select them must be strong. He was asked earlier about possible changes to the side;

"There's been lot's of interest from players wanting to turn out for us on Sunday. That's fantastic as it gives me a lot of options. I do have a 14 man squad in my mind which i will announce tomorrow. Prior to that i will be making no further comment."

It is expected that Glynn Halliday and Craig Graves will return to the squad, with Wes Jubb, Tom Boardman and Andrew Given being considered for spots on the bench. This weeks squad announcement is one of the most eagerly awaited in recent times and several players will be left disappointed as they miss out. Culkin will be asked fully about his selection in his Friday press conference.

League newcomers Navigation have had a disappointing first season, finding themselves propping up the table. There have been on field controversies too which have been well publicised elsewhere and dealt with, so there is no need to discuss them further. There are no previous meetings between the clubs so it is impossible to pinpoint strengths and weaknesses they may have. One thing is for sure, they will want to improve their form and will see Sundays home game as the ideal place to start.

With a full squad i would expect us to win easily, however we will need to be at the top of our game to ensure the 3 points tomorrow. The number of players we have missing is incredible. At my last count there are 15 players, that have represented us this season, unavailable for this match for various reasons. Not all of them will be selected by the club again. On the positive side we have produced some of our best displays in times of adversity. I'm hoping tomorrow will prove the same.
Tom Boardman is in the 1st team tomorrow. He has deserved a call up previously but the call has not come. Ironically his selection comes during the worst run of form he has shown in the last three years. Hopefully the step up in standard will inspire him to raise his game and produce the form he is capable of.

A pleasing result. To score 6 goals away from home is remarkable. Also delighted to have scored 4 of those myself. I had doubts that the goals would ever return, and had considered retirement numerous times this season already. We musn't get carried away with this result though. Yes it was a good win and has stopped the rot, but we have much tougher tests to come and the players will have to maintain this form to retain their places.
A good win for the 1st team too. Coming on the back of some disappointing results and a flurry of postponements. Very nice to see Chris Barlow, Tom Boardman and Dan Shaw all play 90 minutes too. A sign that form in the reserves is rewarded.

With the club having just one fixture this weekend, the reserves clash with Navigation, i imagine there'll be plenty of players wanting a game. Andrew Given in particular is one who i expect to be banging on my office door asking to play. It will be impossible to accommodate everyone though and key players from yesterdays game must be rewarded. I am planning on bringing Wes Jubb back into the fold, he along with Glynn Halliday and Craig Graves will fill three spots in the squad. Tony Williamson is unavailable this weekend which frees up a spot for this game, although he will obviously be straight back in next time after his stunning display on Sunday. There will be some disappointed this week, but that is what we want. A squad of players committed to the club and upset if they aren't picked. I do have a 14 man squad in my mind at present, we will see how that develops.

9.00am - Start piecing the squad together for Sunday. Tom Boardman has clinched two potential new signings for us, but they will have to wait for their debuts. Competition is so fierce this week that i cannot afford to field untested players. I'm sure they'll turn out to be fabulous players for the club, but the battlefields of South Reddish Park are not the place to find out.

3.30pm - Squad complete bar one. Regular readers will not be surprised to learn that the player i'm waiting to confirm is the enigmatic Stuart Rowson. Behind the 14 man squad there is a standby list oozing with quality. I will announce the squad on Thursday.

Boardman Tight-Lipped at Talk of Mill Brow Exit

Tom Boardman has refused to deny rumours he could walk out on Mill Brow at the end of the season. Reports at the weekend suggested the central defender would quit the club in May after growing frustrated at lack of first team football and criticism from some of Mill Brow's support as well as sections of the Stockport media.
Last month Boardman caused disquiet at Marple Hall when he claimed he would return to play for a New Mills club "...in a couple of years"

When asked about whether he was happy at Mill Brow, he merely shrugged.
When asked why he thought the fans had turned against him he answered "I don't know" and he offered a similar response when asked about leaks within the club that appeared to undermine his status as a key player.

Shorn of several regular players for a variety of reasons it was an achievement in itself for Mill Brow to field two sides. Early discussions between players "in the know" suggested that both sides may struggle with under strength teams being fielded. Incredibly however both teams emerged victorious.
Mill Brow Reserves travelled to the hostile environment that is Brinnington Park to face struggling Brinnington Youth. With another game on the adjacent pitch offering more appeal to the usual hordes of spectators that always attend games in this part of Stockport, Mill Brow Reserves would not have to endure the usual white hot atmosphere that has proved to intimidate players and referees alike.

The line up was;

Tactical changes had been made for this fixture, with manager Culkin selecting Jackson in his favourite defensive midfield role to provide cover for the defence and to allow Garlick and Large enough freedom to support the lone striker. It was the opportunity Garlick had been waiting for for some time and he did not let anyone down.

Dean Large fitted back nicely into central midfield too and it was the constant probing of the midfield trio that saw the visitors enjoy a flurry of early chances, the most notable of which was a left footed shot by Culkin that the keeper palmed round for a corner.

It seemed inevitable that Mill Brow would score before too long and on cue a defender crudely hacked Tony Williamson down in the area for a penalty, which Culkin duly converted. It was 2-0 almost immediately, a long ball out of defence found Tony Williamson who's mazy run ended with him firing past the keeper from 12 yards out.

Williamson added his second of the game shortly afterwards, a stunning shot from 25 yards out with the outside of his right boot. The keeper didn't move a muscle as the ball fizzed past him into the corner of the net, never rising of the surface on its way.

At 3-0 Mill Brow appeared to switch off and the home side gained a foothold in the game, when the visitors failed to clear a corner properly and the ball was swung into the box again. Goodwin misjudged the flight of the ball, not helped by the swirling wind, and the ball drifted in. An undeserved goal and a lucky goal, however it was enough to wake up Mill Brow and they added a fourth before half time. Gaw strode out of defence with the ball and his long ball found Williamson. Williamson drove into the area before squaring the ball with the outside of his boot to Culkin six yards out. The frontman made no mistake, slamming the ball past the keeper. It was no more than the visitors deserved.

The second half was always going to be tricky for Mill Brow as the wind was against them, and there were few chances created. Brinnington puled one back with a 20 yard shot past Goodwin. Culkin then restored the 3 goal cushion, pulling down a cross by Roberts and volleying in from 18 yards out, completing his hat-trick in the process.

He made it six shortly afterwards after another great run by Williamson, the winger pulled the ball back to Culkin 10 yards out, full of confidence he jinked around the last defender and with his left foot toe knobbed it really hard past the keeper. The game was over, but the home side kept going and did pull a further goal back before the end.

It was a much needed win for Mill Brow Reserves and should hopefully kick-start an improvement in form.

Man of the match was difficult. Garlick and Roberts played very well. Dean Large was solid and Tony Williamson excellent. Chris Culkin could rightly expect the award with 4 goals. However the selection today is veteran midfielder Steve Jackson who was outstanding in his central midfield position.

Defensive Crisis at Mill Brow Reserves?

Mill Brow Reserves crashed to yet another damaging defeat against Romiley Sports, yet again conceding 5 goals in the game. In spite of the side containing a glut of attacking talent, a fantastic midfield and a defence more than adequate for the task in hand, the Marple side flopped again. It is the number of goals being conceded that are sure to cause Mill Brow boss Culkin the biggest headache. Especially considering all the goals conceded against Romiley came from errors. Culkin refused to comment to the the press following the game, but a club source has suggested that he may be looking to re-shuffle the defence and maybe even rock the boat with some stunning decisions selection wise.

The game should certainly not have been played. Conditions were atrocious. The frozen surface made good football impossible and Romiley's long ball game won the day. All five of their goals came from errors by members of the back 5. The front players were barely in the game, with some touching the ball less than 10 times in the game. In conditions conducive to football i am sure Mill Brow would beat Romiley Sports, but both games against them have been played on ridiculous surfaces. That said today's game could have seen Romiley win by many more due to the appalling defensive display.

Dean Large did well after coming on as substitute, but Dan Shaw was man of the match.

Henry Roberts scored both goals.

Goodwin who has been in fabulous form for the reserves recently had been tipped to replace the incumbent 1st team custodian Alex Davies for the mid-table clash. A Mill Brow insider did indicate that Goodwin was unhappy with the decision, although there is no official word and the player himself has refused to comment on selection issues.

Sunday 1st January 2012
Scarcely time to draw breath over this Christmas. Enjoyed some serious family time and my daughters first experience of the festive season. The traditional Mill Brow "Olds v Youngs" Boxing Day fixture was a highlight and an opportunity to try to regain sharpness. Sadly some of the Olds looked better than our current crop.
As much as i have enjoyed Christmas and the New Year, including a fabulous meal at the in-laws today, i cannot afford to dwell on life elsewhere. My life is football and there is Mill Brow business to attend to. We have an important fixture in 7 days time against Brinnington Youth and i need to be mentally planning my squad for that game. The fact that the game clashes with the Manchester City v Manchester United FA Cup game may also affect the availability of players. We shall see.

Wednesday 4th January 2012
Time to contact the squad and determine availability for Sundays game. As i feared availability is limited. Paul Smith, our biggest loss of the season, is still injured. I was hoping to have him fit for the run in. Si Hinchcliffe is also another long term casualty. Ben Boardman not available again and Steve Jackson has picked up a groin injury. Dean Large is fit, but probably only fit enough for the bench. I anticipate the 1st team will be missing players so we are in trouble. Maybe the bad weather we've had this week can help us.

Club secretary Jamie Nuttall has attended the league meeting tonight and we have the January fixtures. All very winnable games. If we play them all i want a minimum of 3 wins from these games.
The 1st team have no fixture on the 29th January, i would imagine a few of their players would like a run out for us, and i will have big decisions to make for that game. The opponents are Navigation, a team below us in the league and a game we should definitely win. I will think about this one over the next few weeks. Later in the evening Jamie informs me that Stockport Council have called off all games on their pitches this weekend. A blow, but maybe a blessing in disguise. We shall see.
Due to childcare commitments i am unable to train again. I shall check on attendance through my network of moles this weekend.

Big news today is that Jamie Nuttall has been called up to the 1st team for their game on Sunday away at Higher Poynton. I shall watch the game to offer support to the club.

I have read the morning papers and cannot find one writer tipping us for promotion. So i will use that in future team talks. The fact that we have played very few league games, mostly against top teams has been ignored by the press. Hopefully it will be them that end up with egg on their face as i plan our assault on promotion.
Some good news player wise, a player who featured for us earlier in the season has indicated that he is available for upcoming games. Competition for places can only help us as we move forward.

Defensive Shortage is Concern for Culkin

Chris Culkin believes Mill Brow Reserves risk blowing their promotion chances unless they can bring in a regular central defender before the end of the transfer window.
The Mill Brow Reserves boss faces a selection crisis for next Sunday's local derby with Romiley Sports, with a number of players injury doubts.
Culkin says that he is having trouble filling his squad for the vital league clash, with Si Hinchcliffe out for the immediate future, Andy Gaw injured, Ben Boardman unavailable and Paul Smith still unavailable with a back problem. Dean Large has been struggling for weeks with injury and Culkin himself is feeling the effects of rushing back from a serious back injury.

Selection Headaches?

The manager fears that without defensive reinforcement the yellows could hit problems in the promotion race as the pressure builds.

He wants the quick departure of a number of squad players and for the club to bring in a central defender who is available on a regular basis, as well as midfield reinforcements and a new striker.

It is believed that the Mill Brow board have told Culkin that he can only bring players in if he releases some first. The club has already released one player and offers will be considered for others throughout January.

"If we don't have enough players it's tough for us, we are not Bredbury Travellers" said the Mill Brow Reserves boss.

"The difference is that other clubs are used to winning things, they play without pressure. For us it's different. This could be our first promotion in many years and we need to do everything we can to achieve it"

It is unlikely that bringing in new players would cause the club to break any of UEFA's financial fair play rules, but it is still unlikely that any transfers will be sanctioned without departures first.

January Transfer Window Open - Culkin to Chase Targets?

Mill Brow Reserves boss Chris Culkin has remained tight-lipped over potential January transfer targets. It was believed that following a mixed season so far he would be dipping into the market once more in a bid to strengthen the squad for a promotion push. However his comments earlier today seem to suggest that he may leave the squad as it is;

"Why should i put a sticking plaster on something? We're quite happy with what we've got at the moment"

"Who is going to let us have their best player in January? I don't see it happening"

Culkin - Frustrating Board Meeting?

"I would like to get one or two out on loan, maybe to get some game time, but at the moment we don't need to do anything"

"We've got Dean Large coming back any time, Ben Boardman hopefully will be available from February and with a bit of luck we may get Si Hinchcliffe playing again. Those three would walk into any team in the league and we've missed them in their absence. Also with Andy Given moving into the first team, there's a possibility that we may get a player or two coming down to us, which will help. We were due to have Chris Lees for a game or two prior to Christmas, to have a player like that in the squad would be good for the team and exciting for the supporters"

Rumours are bound to continue though that following a rush of signings in late October/Early November, none of which are still at the club, the board have slashed Culkin's transfer budget pending the improvement in performances on the pitch. Supporters are getting impatient. After a disappointing few seasons, 2011/12 started well raising expectations, expectations which at the moment are not being met.

Balls - Following the entertaining away draw at bookies favourites for the league Bredbury Travellers, Mill Brow's entire bag of footballs was stolen from the dressing rooms. In spite of the best efforts of club secretary Jamie Nuttall, the balls have never been recovered nor ransom demand received.

Barlow C - After spending his debut season at Mill Brow in the first team, few in the reserves knew much about Chris Barlow. His performances in the first half of the season have certainly changed that. Recently voted the teams player of the season so far, he has impressed in virtually every game and played in a variety of positions.

Bell R - In spite of being a first team regular, Rick Bell did feature in the reserves end of season clash with Marple FC in season 2009/10. He was unable to prevent the team slumping to a 6-0 defeat.

Boardman B - What can you say about Ben Boardman that he has not already said himself? He has been a Mill Brow player for a number of seasons, moving between teams regularly. He has performed admirably in defence and attack, even spending some time in goal for both teams. In his absence this season Mill Brow Reserves have struggled, which highlights his importance to the team.

Boardman T - Defence, Midfield and Attack. Tom Boardman has appeared in all positions for Mill Brow Reserves, proving his commitment to the team and the club. His best position is central defence. Strangely so far in season 2011/12 he has failed to score. Usually he can be relied upon to chip in with his share of goals from set plays. Tom is known for his tough tackling style.

Bookings - In spite of playing in one of the toughest divisions in the league and facing severe provocation, Mill Brow Reserves have maintained an excellent disciplinary record at all times over the last few seasons, a record for which they should be very proud. There are only 3 bookings that spring immediately to mind, those of Chris Culkin (for dissent) and James McilVenny (foul) in the clash with Adswood Unted B in 2009/10, and Rick Snith against Bredbury Travellers earlier this season. In 2010/11 the team did not receive a single booking.

Boxing Day - On Boxing Day each year the club holds an Olds v Youngs match. Played regardless of the weather, some entertaining games have been played in recent times. This seasons fixture ended in a controversial 4 all draw.

Brabyns Park - In spite of almost being a home game for Mill Brow Reserves, they have not enjoyed much success on the fields of Brabyns in recent times. Visits to Brabyns have ended in defeats to Marple FC, Roaring Winds and Cherry Tree Rangers.

Bredbury Travellers - Following a victory over Bredbury Travellers in pre-season 2009/10, Mill Brow Reserves have enjoyed little success against their local rivals in the last few years. This in spite of the sides being very similar ability wise. This season however with Bredbury Travellers fielding a number of ex-Bredbury FC players, the game ended in a 4-4 draw. Indeed had Mill Brow taken their chances they would have won the game comfortably, which would have been the only defeat their opponents would have suffered in the league. It is expected that they will win the league at a canter this season.

Brinnington Ward Labour Club - Now in Division 2, Brinnington Ward Labour Club have been something of a bogey team in the last few seasons beating Mill Brow Reserves in every meeting in both league and cup. Currently at the bottom of division 2 it is possible that the sides could meet again next season in the 3rd division.

Brinnington Youth - New to the league Mill Brow Reserves won the only meeting between the sides 4-2 in a cup clash in late September. The first league game between the clubs was postponed due to the Brinnington sides inability to field a team.

Broken Bones - Mill Brow Reserves have suffered awful luck with injuries in recent times. Particularly those involving broken bones. Jamie Nuttall (poppadom fingers), Phil Russell (ankle), Chris Culkin (spine) and James Mcilvenny (leg) have all spent spells on the sidelines in the last 2 years.

Large to Return

Inspirational skipper Dean Large is expected to return to the Mill Brow side for this weekends fixtures. Following a nasty knee injury sustained in October/November, Large has been sidelined for a number of weeks.

Ben has made only sporadic appearances so far but has impressed when he's played, whereas Tom has played regularly and perhaps been slightly below his best. With Ben returning in February & Tom aiming to bounce back, both should have a strong finish to the season.

Interview With The Gaffer - Chris Culkin

Chris Culkin took over the Mill Brow Reserves managers job from Jamie Nuttall in the pre-season of 2011/12. After impressive early results it looked an inspired appointment. A disappointing October though saw morale drop and player availability plummet. Form did improve following the return of Andrew Given but a terrible result at home to Romiley Sports looks like sending the Marple club into the festive season on a negative note. Here we ask Chris about his hopes, aspirations, targets etc for the rest of the season.

MBB: Chris, how would you rate the season so far?

CC: If i'm honest it's been a mixed bag. We had a tremendous start. The clever money would have been on us to win the league after our win away at AFC Stockport Res then drawing away at bookies favourites Bredbury Travellers, we really had the chances to win that game. But following the win against Brinnington Youth in the cup we lost Andrew Given and Ben Boardman. Paul Smith has not appeared since the first game of the season and Dean Large has been injured. Wes Jubb's appearances have also been sporadic due to other comittments. So understandably minus those players results dropped.

MBB: How do you see the season finishing?

CC: We can still compete. Given may return to the 1st team, and if he does fair play to him, but that should also free a player up for our squad too. Dean should be back before long too. Sadly Alex Purrier will miss games due to Man City playing Sunday fixtures, but Ben Boardman may return by February to counter that. I still expect us to challenge for promotion and finish top 4.

MBB: How disappointing was last week?

CC: To lose to a side as poor as Romiley Sports is awful. We created so many chances but credit to their keeper, he was fantastic. He made a few unbelievable saves in the match. He deservedly was man of the match. Hopefully next time out he'll not play as well.

Culkin's Thoughts

MBB: How have the new signings settled in?

CC: Dean Large settled in immediately and i saw that he was the type of player to lead by example. That's why i appointed him as captain. It's a shame he's missed games through injury as we certainly would not have lost to either Hinds Head Reserves or Romiley Sports had he played. Tony Williamson too has been fantastic, although his form has dropped a little of late. Having said that, he set high standards so is entitled to the odd bad game.

MBB: Who has been your best/most important player?

CC: Prior to the season i would have told anyone that my most important player would be Ben Boardman. Obviously he's not available at present as he pursues his coaching career (i will certainly pass advice on to him where i can), Tony and Dean have been excellent too. If i'm honest though i'd say Chris Barlow has been the star for me. I perhaps underestimated his talents when he dropped down from the 1st team, but he has changed my opinion and he is certainly a key to our success.

MBB: Who has been the biggest disappointment?

CC: I couldn't really pinpoint one player for that. We've had some great results where players who i didn't expect to actually impressed me, then others when star players, who usually perform let us down. My biggest disappointment was the fact that we lost to Offerton Green in the cup, when we would have won had we had 11 players at the start. Also the defeat to Hinds Head Reserves had me on the verge of quitting, likewise i was very down after the defeat to Romiley Sports last week although that was more down to bad luck that performance.

MBB: Chris, i know you're in a hurry, but one more question. Who are the key performers for the rest of the season?

CC: This is the last question i will answer as i've other appearances to make tonight. I'd say without a shadow of a doubt that key players will be Tom Boardman, Dean Large, Tony Williamson and myself. I would also expect Henry Roberts and Will Darby to up their game as we push for promotion.

Sadly this weeks fixtures have been postponed. Disappointingly for Mill Brow Reserves who were expected to field an astonishingly strong side in their away clash with Hinds Head Reserves. It was rumoured that 1st team stars Chris Lees and Pete Jackson may have been dropped down to give them game time along with seasoned campaigner Jon Phillips who likewise would be looking for 90 minutes action at this stage in his career. Hopefully they'll all be offered the opportunity to test their wits in the 4th Division at some stage this season.

Unsurprisingly Dominic Randle finished top of this poll with 57% of the votes. Andrew Given did receive a number of votes in spite of his 2 month absence. He has returned to goal scoring form of late and will no doubt be challenging for the top scorers gong.

Maybe i'm not the person to manage this team. I always want to win, but it appears that club politics goes against that and a number of the players don't appear to share my ambition!"

In treacherous conditions Mill Brow Reserves faced up to local rivals Romiley Sports in an eagerly awaited 4th division clash. Already weakened by the late withdrawal of Wes Jubb further reshuffling was required when Dan Shaw failed to turn up as arranged. He did make contact after kick off time, but sadly it was too late for him to be included in the line up. Therefore, with Stuart Rowson also not present as the players warmed up, the team selected itself;

After undertaking impressive warm up drills Romiley flew out of the traps and were 2-0 up very quickly. Both goals were preventable. The first, a missed defensive header leaving the striker with a tap in and the second was from a Goodwin punch to the edge of the box, it did fall nicely to be struck back in, but the effort should have been blocked by the Mill Brow defence. Mill Brow did create the odd chance in the first half, notably when Culkin ran clear on goal. He rounded the keeper only to see his shot hit the outside of the post and agonisingly run away from the onrushing Given. Almost immediately Romiley added a 3rd goal. Half time arrived with the score 3-0 and Mill Brow were left with it all to do in the 2nd period.

Culkin stressed the need for the midfield to play further forward. Himself and Given were constantly left isolated and easily outnumbered by the defence. Indeed the home side came out much the stronger in the 2nd half. Culkin setting the standard with some crunching challenges on the defenders who appeared intimidated by the physical play. Barlow, Roberts and Williamson began to threaten more too as chances were created. Sadly it appeared as though it would not be Mill Brows day as Given saw two efforts well saved and on numerous occasions the ball fell away from his onrushing strike partner. Eventually the pressure did pay off. Picking the ball up on the left corner of the penalty area Culkin played in an incredible pass behind the defence to Given who steamed in and slammed in an impressive finish with his weaker foot.

Romiley Sports were out of the game at this stage and it appeared inevitable that Mill Brow Reserves would go on to win the match. Attack followed attack with yet more near misses and frustration. Culkin and Given linked up well as usual, with Given running the channels tirelessly. Sadly they received little support from the resulting balls into the box.

Garlick - Played with more confidence

On the 75 minute mark Garlick, playing with more freedom and confidence than of late, saw a fabulous chip hit the post, Barlow's follow up was well blocked. Yet more balls into the box just fell short of attackers. It was clearly not going to be Mill Brow's day seeing all these chances missed and the run of the ball clearly favouring the opposition, this was hammered home when Romiley added a fourth goal on the break. The goal knocked the stuffing out of the home side, heads dropped, although there were a few that kept going. It was thanks to these that Brow added a 2nd. A right wing corner was cleared to the edge of the box, only for Given to smash in a fabulous left footed goal from 20 yards. Maybe not as good as Barlow's at Bredbury Travellers, but certainly not far behind. This encouraged Mill Brow to press once more and they surged forward with wave after wave of attacks. Sadly on a break away the visitors added a 5th goal. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the home side who paid for their poor 1st half display and their failure to take chances. Much better is required next week as sadly it appeared as though there were a number of players lacking the will and desire to be victorious.

Outspoken, opinionated, outstanding, outlandish. All these words could be used to describe Mill Brow Striker/Central Defender Ben Boardman. A man who has shone in both 1st and 2nd teams, Boardman is currently missing from the club due to his coaching job with New Mills Juniors. He is also a keen cricketer. The supporters of Mill Brow Reserves have missed him in his absence, since September the club has won just one game in his absence and his return in February is eagerly awaited. Here we catch up with him as he finds a spare moment from his sporting commitments.

MBB: Ben, first of all thanks for finding the time to talk to us today. Now, how does it feel to be part of the Mill Brow set-up?

BB: I've always enjoyed playing for both teams. I'm looking forward to returning in February.

MBB: Ben, it will be great to have you back. The club and the fans have missed you in your absence, results as you know have been disappointing while you've been away. Do you get a buzz playing for Mill Brow?

BB: Yes, the same sort of buzz experienced in one of Rick Hulme's special DVD's!!!

MBB: Cheers Ben, i think we know what you're hinting at there!!! Ha Ha. Now, you're a keen cricketer too, do you find that you get the same satisfaction from cricket as football?

BB: I enjoy cricket and football equally.

BB: Gazza and Beardsley inspired me initially.

MBB: I can see a likeness there Ben, interesting. Do any particular Mill Brow players inspire you?

BB: Myself

BB: Most people who didn't play were bullied, by me!!!!

BB: The cup final we won 4-2 and i scored the 3rd.

MBB: A great moment for all Mill Brow fans certainly. Is there anything you enjoy particularly about playing for the club?

BB: Passing football and good pitches. Neither of which you get in the Buxton Taverners League.

BB: Self-belief

Match Preview - Mill Brow Reserves v Romiley Sports

Mill Brow Reserves manager Chris Culkin named his squad for this fixture on Thursday. It is believed that while not completely at full strength, Culkin will still have a very strong squad to choose from. Midfielder Wes Jubb was due to continue in the reserves in a bid to regain fitness. However he was subsequently called into the 1st team squad. It is unlikely that Culkin will select Jubb again.

Jubb - Never to Return?

Chris Barlow will continue in central midfield along with the returning Dan Shaw. Henry Roberts has promised a performance and Tony Williamson is always a threat. With a midfield like that Mill Brow Reserves can approach Sundays game with confidence and Jubb can wonder whether he would have been selected
anyway.

Jamie Nuttall was expected to miss the game with a neck injury but will make a surprise return. The injury list is still long though including Large (knee), Gaw (foot) and Hinchcliffe (ankle). Taking into account the retired Axford and the missing Paul Smith, there is considerable talent on the sidelines for Mill Brow Reserves, who's inclusion would certainly mean promotion for the Marple side.

Mill Brow's recent form has improved a draw against the league leaders a fortnight ago and then a win against Offerton Park last week. Romiley Sports have enjoyed a turnaround in fortunes too. They have been unbeaten in a month and have enjoyed victories of late including a win over Travellers Call last week. The last time the clubs met in the cup last season Mill Brow Reserves were comprehensive victors scoring 7 goals. This one will be tighter, but Mill Brow Reserves always fancy a win at home and i tip them to win this one.

Adswood United B - Mill Brow Reserves generally have the upper hand in their clashes. Most famously at Adswood Park in 2009/10 when Chris Culkin scored a hat-trick and Tom Boardman was sub. They were also the opponents following David Haye v Audley Harrison last season, a disastrous result featuring hung over players and non-appearances.

AFC Stockport Res - Milll Brow Reserves have beaten AFC Stockport Reserves comfortably in every meeting between the two sides. Usually racking up a hat-full of goals in the process. In early 2011/12 they were thrashed 8-1, with Andrew Given grabbing 4 and Ben Boardman adding 2.

Affiliated Club - Obviously Mill Brow Reserves are affiliated with Mill Brow FC.

Aging - Mill Brow Reserves have featured more than their fair share of over 30's in recent seasons including Chris Culkin, Wes Jubb, Steve Jackson, Paul Smith, Mick Woolridge and Mike Leahy.

Anthropology - The Mill Brow blog site could certainly be considered an anthropological exercise.

Ash (The) - Now named FC Jubilee in Division 3, Mill Brow Reserves have enjoyed mixed fortunes against The Ash. Two comfortable victory's, a draw and a horrendous defeat the outcomes from the four meetings. Affectionately known as The Gash.

Atlas - In 2009/10 season Mill Brow Reserves visited Atlas away, a side 2 divisions higher in the pyramid, expecting little. At 2-0 down at half-time it appeared their fears were well founded. However a Dan Shaw goal, a Chris Culkin brace and a Garlick free-kick saw Mill Brow Reserves win after extra-time. Earlier this season however Mill Brow Reserves visited Atlas expecting, what ensued was one of the most disappointing performances of the season and a 6-2 defeat, Culkin with both goals.

Attacking Play - Mill Brow Reserves are known for their attacking style of play and in recent seasons have featured exciting striking talents such as Andrew Given, Ben Boardman, RIck Axford, Luke Jubb and Chris Garlick.

Availability - Player availability is a major issue with Mill Brow Reserves. Had they been at full strength on more occasions last season they would surely have been promoted. Had they been at full strength this season more than they have, then the league would surely be a formality. Unfortunately they have been robbed of key players such as Paul Smith, Ben Boardman, Andrew Given and Dean Large for lengthy periods.

Axford (Rick) - Winger/Striker Rick Axford has been a key player for Mill Brow Reserves in recent times in spite of missing long periods through injury. He has produced scintillating performances and scored many goals in his spell at the club. Sadly he has taken leave from the club and it is unknown if he will ever feature for Mill Brow again.

"...Garlick was unhappy with my criticism of him during the game. In truth i understand where he's coming from. Some players thrive on it, for example Tom Boardman and myself are constantly at each other during the game, but it's all forgotten in the showers afterwards. Maybe i should recognise the need to manage each player differently and i will look to do so in the coming weeks. I do understand his frustration at lack of football and will also look to give him more opportunities in the next few games."

Nuttall Facing 2 Weeks Out

Jamie Nuttall has suffered a further set-back in his efforts to earn a regular place in the Mill Brow Reserves team. After starting yesterdays victory over Offerton Park at centre-back, Nuttall was forced out of the action after 70 minutes. He left the ground in a neck brace and after visiting the clubs physios and consulting the medical staff today it has been confirmed he will be sidelined for around a fortnight.

Nuttall - 2 Weeks Out

It is a hammer blow to Nuttall, who after starting the season in goal and earning a 1st team call up, subsequently lost his place to the in form Steven Goodwin. Although initial reports suggest Nuttall will only miss 2 weeks, his injury record hints at a much longer lay off. Some even suggesting that Nuttall may be missing until February.

The obvious question this injury now raises is over the identity of Tom Boardman's partner at the heart of the Mill Brow Reserves defence in the upcoming game against Romiley Sports. With Andy Gaw and now Nuttall injured, Alex Purrier enigmatic in terms of availability and Paul Smith missing it is unclear who will feature in the next match. Manager Chris Culkin may be forced into the transfer market once more. We shall see.

After a very disappointing start to the season, one man has stood out in the last few games and has produced the performances his reputation suggests he is capable of.

Player of the Month

The Mill Brow Reserves November player of the month is Tom Boardman. Not only has Tom produced on the pitch, his influence extends to the younger players as he sets an example to them all. It is believed that manager of the club uses Boardman as a 'mentor' to the youth team squad and also as an unofficial middle man between himself and the players. It is an award well deserved, as Boardman finally shows the form befitting his status as the best central defender in the club.

On a blustery November morning Mill Brow Reserves faced Offerton Park. A side who struggled last season, but who's league position suggests that they will enjoy a better campaign this time around. Mill Brow Reserves They will no doubt have expected a win away from home in Marple, which many looking at the league tables would have agreed with, however this early in the season the tables can be deceptive and Mill Brow Reserves went into the game on the back of a draw with the league leaders, fully expecting to beat their opponents.

The home side made a slow start Offerton Park enjoyed the majority of early possession and chances as the returning Jubb and ever reliable Chris Barlow struggled to gain a foothold in the game. It did not take too long though and they began to win challenges, and thread balls into the channels for the frontmen to attack. Mill Brow's first real chance came around the 15 minute mark, a tremendous looping ball into the box from Steve Jackson was headed powerfully goal-wards by Culkin. The keeper produced an excellent flying save to keep it out. Mill Brow took the lead mid-way through the half, the ever aware Culkin took a short corner to Williamson who ran into the box and fired powerfully home from the angle. It was no more that Mill Brow deserved. Surprisingly Offerton Park levelled 10 minutes later, Goodwin attempted to throw the ball to Boardman who mis-controlled in centre field. Offerton won the ball and sent the striker clear, who lobbed Goodwin to make it 1-1. The goal shook Mill Brow into life and it was not long before they regained the lead. Given producing a moment of brilliance, winning the ball from a defender, dribbling into the box and slamming a powerfl drive into the far corner. It should have been even better moments later, an Offerton Park corner was cleared to Culkin wide on the left, he threaded a fantastic ball through three defenders to send Given clear. Given's shot was well saved by the keeper and the ball scrambled away. It was not long before Given did make it 3-1 however, he ran clear of the defence again and clipped the ball wide of the onrushing keepers outstretched right hand. The referee brought the half to a close moments later.

Nuttall - Played well before injury

The 2nd half was always going to be more difficult for Mill Brow as they attacked the Dan Bank end into a fierce wind. Offerton Park with the wind in their arsenal launched an aerial assault, which was handled tremendously by Wing-Commander Boardman and his gunner Nuttall. Will Darby too was enjoying an excellent afternoon, probably his best of the season as Mill Brow dealt with the opposition threat. There were chances at the other end too in spite of the gale force wind, Given's pace and Jubb's probing proving a constant threat too the visitors. Just when the game looked comfortably won disaster struck. Firstly Offerton pulled goal back via a hotly disputed effort, when it was clear that Goodwin was fouled. Then central defender Nuttall was forced out of the action with a sore neck. Nuttall had been excellent until that stage and it was a shame he was forced out of the game. Garlick came on to replace him, Barlow slotting into the defence and Garlick taking up his usual place in midfield. Rowson was also in the action by this stage and should have scored his first goal for the club, Williamson crossed powerfully from the left but as Rowson slid in unmarked at the far post three yards out the wind slightly (but slightly enough) diverted the balls path, meaning Rowson could only volley over. It was unlucky for Rowson as how can he be blamed for Mother Natures actions? As both sides battled the elements Mill Brow finally managed to kill the game off via another breakaway, Williamson running clear on goal from the right wing squared the ball to Culkin, who smuggled the ball in via the slightest of deflections for his 6th goal of the season, leaving him four goals behind Given in the scoring stakes. Offerton Park were deflated by the goal and offered very little afterwards, meaning Brow ran out comfortable winners.

Boardman - Best display of the season

The official blogsite reporters singled out Chris Barlow and Andrew Given for special mentions, however guest summariser Wes Jubb was given the difficult task of picking man of the match. He named Culkin and Williamson as contenders, but ultimately singled out Tom Boardman as the star man.

Interview with Chris Garlick

Chris Garlick joined Mill Brow at the start of the 2009/10 season, making his debut against The Ash. Starting his career at the club on the bench, he announced his arrival by winning a penalty and then scoring a free-kick against Atlas away. Since then he has made a number of appearances for the club in a variety of positions. Garlick's CV can also boast a number of appearances for the ill fated The Wheatsheaf franchise.

MBB: Chris, how does it feel to be part of the Mill Brow set up?

Garlick: It feels good to be part of a team that has a good set of lads. No bullshit and all the players like to pass the ball.

MBB: Could i just remind you Chris that this is a family website, so just watch the language please. Now, What kind of buzz do you get playing for Mill Brow?

Garlick: I just love playing for Mill Brow, the club has a good set up.

MBB: You're obviously a man of few words, would you swap football for any other sport?

Garlick: No!!!!

Garlick: From a young age i always watched and enjoyed playing football.

Garlick: The second game of my Mill Brow career against Atlas. I started on the bench and we were losing 3-2, i came on and set 2 goals up and scored a 30 yard free-kick.

MBB: I was watching that game Chris and i seem to remember that Mill Brow were actually 2 down, then came back to 2 all, then went 4-2 up. You did win the penalty and score the fabulous free-kick, but i remember Culkin and Dan Shaw were the heroes of that game, not to mention Jamie Nuttall's Gordon Banks style save. Anyway, what is the one thing you love about playing for Mill Brow?

Garlick: The banter, yet everyone on the pitch does their job.

MBB: What makes a great player?

Gaw Ruled Out

Central defender Andy Gaw has been ruled out of tomorrow's clash with Offerton Park. It is believed that Gaw suffered an injured foot in training.

Gaw - Out

Gaw's absence will possibly mean an opportunity for Jamie Nuttall to stake his claim for a central defensive position. Nuttall has featured in that role previously and is no stranger to playing in defence. Manager Chris Culkin is known to reward players for good performances by keeping them in the team, so tomorrow's game represents a big chance for Nuttall to make his mark.

Mill Brow Reserves manager Chris Culkin is expected to name his squad for this fixture later this evening. It is believed that while not completely at full strength, Culkin will still have a very strong squad to choose from. It is rumoured that midfielder Wes Jubb may make his return to action in the reserves in a bid to regain fitness.

Jubb to return?

Jubb has been out of action for a number of weeks for personal reasons, and will need to impress if he's to regain a first team spot. With captain Dean Large seemingly out of action, last weeks midfield of Glynn Halliday and Craig Graves unavailable, and Dan Shaw also missing, Jubb is expected to slot straight into the central midfield spot he held with distinction for a lengthy period. With Chris Barlow (1st team) expected to return and Henry Roberts (drunk) also expected to be named in the squad Mill Brow Reserves can approach Sundays game with confidence.

The players certainly seemed in confident mood earlier today. Utility man Chris Garlick said "We will win comfortably", Andrew Given chipped in with his opinion "We should win on Sunday, any other result is unacceptable, especially with the squad available." Wideman Stuart Rowson in his typical comedic style indicated that victory could only be achieved if he was selected. Rowson is expected to return to the squad this week.

Mill Brow's recent form has not been great although a draw against the league leaders last week suggests that a corner may have been turned. Offerton Park have enjoyed a much better season than last time around, although their lofty league position may be more to do with the fact that they have played considerably more games than their rivals. They did not have a fixture last week. They may also take confidence from the fact that they won at Marple Hall School last season, Mill Brow though thrashed them soundly in the return fixture.

Si Hinchcliffe has not made many appearances since his return to the Mill Brow fold, his well documented battle with injuries has continued to plague him. When fit though he remains a key part of the Mill Brow Reserves set up and hopefully it will not be too long before he is back in the famous yellow shirt. Here we catch up with Si in the wake of the 1-1 draw with Travellers Call and are able to document his first interview of the season;

MBB: First of all Si we'd like to formally welcome you back to the club, it was a couple of years since your last appearance, it's great to have you back.
How does it feel to be back part of the Mill Brow set up?

SH: When i've been involved i've enjoyed it. Obviously i've had a frustrating comeback season due to injury, but hopefully i'll put these problems behind me.

MBB: What kind of buzz do you get playing for Mill Brow?

SH: There are some good footballing players who want to get the ball down and knock it around a bit. There aren't many better things than being part of a move that has involved intricate passing to create a chance. There have been a few moments like that already this season and i want to be involved in some more.

MBB: Would you trade football for any other sport?

SH: Never, though golf would probably see me stay clear of injury.

MBB: What inspires you to play football?

SH: Being part of a team, the moments your team scores, a good first touch, a pin point cross field pass. Every part of football inspires me to be a part of it.

MBB: Which Mill Brow player inspires you?

SH: Jacko. I think i can only dream of playing until i'm his age and he is the ideal role model for any aspiring athletes.

MBB: Why did you decide to play football?

SH: My mum made me!!

MBB: In your opinion what is the best game you have played?

SH: Hard to name one particular game. I supposed i'd have to go with an U14's game where i was the main headline on the second last page of the Buxton Advertiser after scoring 4 goals.

MBB: What is the one thing you enjoy about playing for Mill Brow?

SH: Have enjoyed the chances i've had to play in central midfield so far. Been disappointed that whenever i've played up front the teams shape has gone to pot and i've had to move elsewhere, but i'm sure better opportunities will come.

MBB: What makes a great player?

SH: Discipline. You don't need all the skills or the pace. A player who is intelligent and knows where to position himself in respect of his teams tacticsand formation, knows how to time a run and knows which pass to opt for will more than hold their own. Especially at the level we play.

MBB: Finally, what are your hopes for the season?

SH: On a personal note i hope to get a good run of games injury free and as far as the team goes promotion is a good possibility.

Andy Gaw answered his critics today with his best performance of the season. After a slow start to the season, he was forced to miss the first few games through gay boys rounders, he took time to find his feet, but today produced his best performance to date.

Gaw - It's Easy?!

Gaw's long throws are always a threat, he showed a real improvement fitness wise and was always comfortable on the ball, meaning he contributed from start to finish. In a tight game, he was among the contenders for man of the match along with his centre back partner Tom Boardman who also produced a great performance after a disappointing run of form.

Rowson - I'll Be Back

Following recent selection issues and a spate of poor results Chris Culkin and his trusted lieutenant Andrew Given moved swiftly to acquire new players, three of which were handed their debuts against the league leaders.
With 15 players available at kick off, Stuart Rowson pulled out of the reckoning with forgotten boots meaning Mill Brow lined up as follows;

Debutant Glynn Halliday

The first half of this contest was a tight affair, neither side really gaining control. New signings Halliday and Graves impressed in the Mill Brow midfield, but the wingmen and forwards struggled to contribute. Travellers Call did have chances but Goodwin in the Mill Brow goal made two excellent saves to keep the scores level. The visitors in their usual style dished out tough tackles and attempted to intimidate the referee, Graves in particular was victim to a number of cynical fouls. Mill Brow's best effort of the half came from a Matthew Given snapshot which was well saved by the keeper.
The Mill Brow back four maintained their performance in the second period, Gaw in particular producing his best performance since his return to the side. It was a surprise then when Travellers Call took the lead. A free header from a corner was hooked in to make it 1-0 to the visitors. Culkin responded immediately. Firstly with a fizzing half volley that clipped the post and then by making changes. Nuttall, Garlick and Roberts were introduced for Jackson, Darby and Matt Given.
As the game entered it's climax the visitors tired, Graves and Halliday continued to thrust forward and it cam as no surprise when following a clever pass from Culkin, Halliday curled a delightful chip beyond the keeper from a tight angle. It was no more than he deserved for an energetic debut.

Given - No goals on return

Both sides attacked in search of the winning goal, Mill Brows best chances being a Given half volley and a tremendous lopping volley from Garlick. Travellers missed an unbelievable opportunity when their left winger ran clean through on Goodwin. The keeper stood tall forcing the attacker to blaze high and wide.
All in all Mill Brow will consider themselves happy with a point, even though Travellers Call are a team they would expect to beat. Bearing in mind the unavailability of players, recent results and the way the game was played out, a draw was probably fair.

"It's unacceptable, the league needs to sort teams like this out or evict them from the league. I am sick of my players and myself being abused. I was called a fat, old c**t during the game, how can that be right? Especially considering i only weigh 12 and a half stone?"

"We have 15 lads available for Sunday and only 14 spots available. A few of the players are my secret at this stage, and i'm gonna keep it that way. If any players don't want to play for me then they can leave. Players have left on recent weeks, and i have moved swiftly to replace them with better quality players. I will not be the one who loses in a battle with players. Bringing in new players may upset a few players who may consider themselves established, but it is up to them to make it impossible for me to leave them out in the coming weeks. I'm positive we can beat the league leaders, who are in a false position in my opinion. Chris Barlow and Dean Large will be missed but i'm convinced that the lads coming in will do a good job. Once the likes of Si Hinchcliffe and Paul Smith become available again then we will be formidable at this level. It;'s up to the lads playing now to cement a place for future games".

After a tough week, I have decided that I will continue the blog after all.

We're struggling yet again for a team this week. As we have for the last month. Also over the last few weeks there have been very few (if any) reserve players attending training. Players are always going to be unavailable for various reasons, but it seems unbelievable to me that out of the 50 players we have signed on, that we struggle to get two teams out on a Sunday. That suggests that either we have the worst luck with injuries or players aren't committed. We have also had a player retire this week.
I have put a lot of time and effort into this blog for a number of reasons, firstly because i enjoy doing it, but mainly it was for a laugh and a bit of banter to encourage people to turn up on a Sunday morning & keep the team together. I took over the team from Jamie with the intention of improving the team & initially that worked, the reason we have fallen short of that in recent weeks lies within the squad, nowhere else. We cannot blame Pete for taking players as he's been more than fair with us player wise.
Basically, the blog is getting loads of visits and i am still enjoying it, but if people aren't going to commit to play then the primary function of the blog has failed. Therefore i do not really see much point in continuing to do it. I'm also spending so much time trying to sort out the team, contact players etc that i'm having no time to produce anything of a quality i'm happy with for the blog. It's great that Mill Brow has two teams, but we can't take that for granted, everyone has to pull together to ensure that it continues.
If we can generate interest again and there is any call for it, then i will happily blog again at a later date.

I am now going to start actively looking for new players to come in, so if any of you know anyone who may improve the squad let me know or bring them along.

Barlow Award Allowed to Stand
